“This is important for continuation of fresh water for locals, and it affects people on so many levels,” said Julie Horner, a reporter and resident in the San Lorenzo Valley. “Not only property value if you're looking to sell a home or something, but just to have fresh drinking water and wash water and so forth.”

The nearly $1 million project is replacing an undersized redwood water tank with a new, 120,000-gallon, steel-bolted, 32-foot-tall tank. This tank will aid in firefighter response in the area.

“We're up on the top of a mountain, and we're a few miles away from Boulder Creek,” said Rick Rogers, with the San Lorenzo Valley Water District. “Those trucks are big and heavy, and to have water already up here is huge for the fire department to get up here, hook up and utilize the water.”

This tank replacement is one of the key components of the district's capital improvement projects, which is a $13 million investment in tank replacements and pipeline infrastructure.

“The district's capital improvement project is the biggest in the history of the district that I know of, and I've been here for 48 years,” Rogers said, who will be retiring before the end of the year after nearly 50 years with the company. “We've got projects all over the San Lorenzo Valley, and this is rebuilding our water system. It's huge.”

The water tank should be filled up within the next three to four weeks.
