The box would give people a safe place to anonymously surrender a newborn baby for adoption. Once a baby is placed in the box, an alarm would notify the fire department so they may pick up the child.

The fire department said it needs to raise $20,000 to buy, install, and maintain the baby box. The fire chief said Saturday that they were about halfway to that goal.

"Just last month in central Arkansas there was a newborn that was discovered outside in the middle of the night that had been abandoned. A safe haven baby box would allow for a safe location for that to happen," said Fire Chief Jeremy Criner.

Once all of the money is raised, the fire department says it would take about eight weeks to get the box made and installed.

Donations can be made online, dropped off at the fire station, or mailed to the city.
